The Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters' Associations (İMMİB) organized the panel “Future of the Steel Industry: Decarbonization, Circular Economy, and Emerging Challenges” at the Türkiye Pavilion during COP29 in Baku. The session focused on the global outlook for the steel industry and the challenges associated with its transition towards a lower-carbon production model. Key topics included energy transition, technological development, investment and financing, production methods and circularity. The role of scrap as an important resource for reducing energy use and carbon emissions was also discussed, alongside opportunities in the scrap market. The panel further addressed the latest developments and uncertainties surrounding the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and other emerging trade and climate regulations affecting the steel industry.
