The Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters' Associations (İMMİB) participated in the Trade + Sustainability Hub 2024, held in Abu Dhabi in conjunction with the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference, with the panel “Navigating the Low-Carbon Era: Steel Industry Challenges and Opportunities in Developing Countries.” Moderated by İMMİB Secretary General S. Armağan Vurdu, the panel focused on the challenges and opportunities facing developing countries in the transition towards a low-carbon steel industry. Discussions covered the financing of the green transition, access to low-carbon technologies, technology transfer, circularity and the growing importance of scrap in reducing the sector's carbon footprint. The potential implications of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and other carbon-pricing instruments were also discussed, together with the role of policy support and international cooperation in enabling developing countries to maintain industrial competitiveness throughout the transition.
